She explained, “If you happen to be a predator, it's kind of an easy pickings job, really."

A representative with SourceOne tells us basic background checks are done on their staff but not to the level some in the school district think they should be.

The woman we spoke to says, “There is no backup that the school district is doing to ensure that these people are having their background checks completed. There's nothing being put on file. There's nothing going over to the individual schools where these people are working."

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. -- Janitors at Bartlesville Public Schools may not be getting thoroughly vetted before starting work.

The school district switched to SourceOne, a third party janitorial service, at the beginning of this school year.

2 Works for You started investigating when a former SourceOne employee told us he was not drug tested or fingerprinted before working in a Bartlesville school.

But one woman we spoke to said, “It sounds like they're just taking the word of the company that, 'Yes, we're doing background checks.'"

She didn't want to be identified because she works for Bartlesville Public Schools and is worried that outsourced custodians are not getting the proper background checks, as part of the contract between Bartlesville Public Schools and SourceOne.

She said, “In some cases, they're not being performed at all, and other cases, it's a cheap one you can do over the internet. It's not a federal background check, which is what most . . . That's what employees generally have to have is a federal background check with fingerprinting."

That’s what she had to do to start working for the district. The mom of two wonders why janitors, people working next to children day in and day out, are allegedly not being held to the same standard.

The Bartlesville school district sent 2 Works For You a statement saying, "The district has requested copies of all background checks from SourceOne.” The district also says it will also conduct its own on-site background checks this week and will review source-one's hiring processes.

The statement also says, "There is concern that unapproved subcontracting may have occurred without the district's, and possibly SourceOne management's, knowledge."
