Bates' attorney lashes out after hearing

TULSA - A judge denied bail for former Tulsa County Reserve Deputy Robert Bates Tuesday, sparking emotional outbursts at the courthouse.

" Do you all feel safer now? This guy will protect you. This is your protector right here. Do you all feel safer about Bob Bates being in jail? I hope you feel real good about it," said Bates' attorney Clark Brewster. "That's what I've got to say. This punk here is your protector."

Brewster was entering an elevator after the ruling when he made the comment about Dan Smolen, Eric Harris' family attorney.

"I feel safer," Smolen responded, laughing.

Last week, a jury convicted Bates of manslaughter in Harris' death. They recommended a four-year prison term.

Tuesday's ruling requires Bates to stay behind bars until his sentencing later this month.
