CLAREMORE, Okla. -- Summer vacation is coming to an end for students in Green Country, so a church in Rogers County is now trying to make sure children have what they need for the first day of school.

The First United Methodist Church in Claremore began giving away free school supplies to area kids Monday. The church started the giveaway 19 years ago, and now other local churches, businesses and civic groups help with the effort.

Volunteers said they provided more than 3,200 kids with school supplies, and they expect that number to climb to 3,400 this time.

"We have the teachers' lists here for every school in Rogers County," volunteer Ray Dawson said, "so we can fill a bag with what they need."

Volunteers said any families needing help can stop by the church Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to request a bag of supplies.

The giveaway will continue until August 19. The church is located 1615 OK 88 in Claremore.
