Dennis Byrd, former player for the New York Jets, dies after crash in Rogers County Saturday

ROGERS COUNTY, Okla. -- Dennis Byrd, a former player for the New York Jets, has died after being struck in a head-on crash in Rogers County, says Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

According to OTEMS, the crash happened on the 18000 block of Oklahoma 88 between Oologah and Claremore just after 11 Saturday morning.

Deputies say an SUV heading northbound went off the right shoulder of the road, overcorrected, crossed the center line and hit another car traveling southbound.

 

According to Oklahoma Highway Patrol, 51-year-old Dennis Byrd, a former player for the New York Jets, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Before starting his career in the NFL, Byrd played for the University of Tulsa. Tulsa VP & Director of Athletics Dr. Derrick Gragg, sent 2 Works For You a statement today saying:
 
  "We extend our sincere condolences to Dennis' wife Angela, their children and the entire Byrd family. Dennis exemplified true determination, tremendous heart and humility throughout his life. He had a tremendous playing career at TU and professionally with the New York Jets. He overcame great personal adversity after a life-altering injury on the football field," said Dr. Gragg.
