MUSKOGEE, Okla. — February 17 is Random Acts of Kindness Day, and this year, 2 Works for You has partnered with Osage Casino Hotel to pay it forward in the community.

We thanked Erin Simmons, a local military veteran, for her service in a special way.

"I had no idea what was going on," said Simmons when she stepped into The Barracks in Muskogee.

We presented her with a $50 gift card as a small thank you and appreciation for the time she served the U.S.

Simmons is an Air Force veteran. She served for five years in the early 2000s and is now living in Muskogee.

"I'm going through a very transitional time right now. I've recently had to start over from scratch with my life," shared Simmons.

She said this surprise couldn't have come at a better time.

"It's wonderful. It was very unexpected, and I thank everyone who came to put this together," said Simmons.

The founder of The Barracks, a new veterans' resource facility in Muskogee, helped find Simmons through the veteran contacts in town. Victor Lezama said when he heard her story, he knew she would be deserving of a little kindness.

You can also make someone's day on this Random Acts of Kindness Day. It started in 1995 in Denver, and it has spread internationally.

A simple compliment to a stranger or coworker, opening the door for someone, treating someone to coffee and providing a listening ear are all examples of how you can give back.
