Police are investigating after an 84-year-old woman was found dead on a bus after a scenic bus drive.
Police say after the scenic bus ride, nursing home staff at Brookdale Senior Living thought everyone was out of the bus.
According to police the woman boarded the bus along with seven other residents Saturday afternoon for a bus tour of the city. They returned about an hour later. It wasn't until a family member arrived Sunday night that they realized the victim was dead. She was in the bus for nearly 29 hours.
Police questioned the bus driver—who insists it was an accident.
“Obviously shaken up, obviously did not intend to do this woman harm, so intent is not really the issue its just what occurred so that we can put a case together and send it to the district attorney,” said Sgt. Dave Walker with Tulsa Police.
A relative called 911 around 7:30 Sunday night finding 84-year-old Mary Schlecht dead on the bus.
The death is being investigated as an unattended death. The medical examiners office is also involved in the investigation.
The facility released the statement below following the incident.
"We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to our resident’s family, as this loss is felt throughout our community. We are saddened by the situation, and the community’s leadership is supporting our residents and associates during this time.
We are working closely with local police and authorities on the investigation, and requests for additional information should be directed to them."
