An Oklahoman saves a life

TULSA, Okla. — This is the day a Westville man has been waiting for, a chance at getting his life back.

One man stepped up to save him by donating a kidney.

"It takes a man of faith to give a piece of himself to someone else without any fear or doubt," Chelsea Garr said.

Chelsea and Caleb Garr have known each other since they were young and they've been married for a few years now.

Shortly after their wedding things took a turn for the worst.

"It was really nerve-wrecking to think that this was going to be our life, you know," Chelsea.

Caleb was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2017, and things were hard for a while.

But that all changed when DJ Richmond stepped up. He's married to Caleb's cousin.

"We knew that he needed a kidney for a few months," Chelsea said. "DJ had mentioned that he possibly might consider donating a kidney to him."

DJ and Caleb aren't related, so they weren't expecting to match but they did.

"He was relying on God's will. If it wasn't his will for it to be done," Kelsie said, "It wouldn't have happened. We truly believe that and it's truly a miracle that this is happening."

Now Caleb can have the life he once lived, thanks to DJ's kindness.

"I love Caleb and i love DJ," Kelsie said. "I am so proud of him, that he is humble and he hasn't let his pride take over him or his humility is honorable, and I am so proud to be his wife."

Kelsie believes God brought them together for a reason.

"DJ is the best thing to ever happen to me," Kelsie said. "And the fact that he is trying to give a part of his body to save my cousin who I love, is just so amazing I can't imagine being married to someone else."

The Garr and Richmond families have planned a benefit. They all be having a chill cook off to raise money for medical bills and expenses for both DJ and Caleb at a Westville First Baptist Church, February 8th, at 6pm.
