BIXBY, Okla. — Bixby Public Schools officials have announced new changes to school hours beginning in August.

The board of education approved the proposal to transition to new hours on Thursday night.

The new hours are as follows for the 2019-20 school year:

· All Elementary and Intermediate Schools, 8 a.m. – 3:05 p.m. (early release Fridays – 2:05 p.m.)
· Middle School, Ninth Grade, and High School, 8:45 a.m. – 3:46 p.m. (early release Fridays – 2:50 p.m.)

The district says they belive the change will have a positive impact on student academics and health by "better matching the secondary students’ biological sleep cycles and elementary students’ peak times for academic and social engagement."

The district says it recognizes that the transition poses some challenges to families in relation to after school supervision of younger children. The school says it will be working over the next few months to implement or expand programs to assist families.
