CHECOTAH, Okla. -- The assistant police chief at the Checotah Police Department died in a Tulsa hospital Monday after sustaining severe injuries earlier this month during a bad wreck.

Justin Durrett passed away after he was badly hurt February 11 in a crash on an icy road. Loved ones said that he succumbed to his injuries after a courageous fight.

Police Chief Darren Glover expressed his condolences in a statement sent to 2 Works for You. "Justin was the strongest man I have ever known," Chief Glover wrote. "He will be greatly missed by our department and community. We love ya, CPD #25!!!"

Durrett worked for the Checotah Police Department for the past 13 years. He was a father of two young children.

The police department posted on its Facebook page that arrangements for Durrett's funeral and escort will be announced at a later time.
