CHEROKEE COUNTY — The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office said one of their deputies is in the hospital after a shooting accident while duck hunting on Monday morning.

Officials said Deputy Curtis Elkins was duck hunting when he tripped, causing his loaded shotgun to go off, shooting him in the head.

Cherokee County deputies said Elkins is alert and talking at a local hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening.

At this time, they are waiting for swelling to go down before proceeding with treatment, officials said.
