Community partners assist with vaccination efforts in Oklahoma

TULSA, Okla. — As Oklahomans continue to struggle finding available appointments on the state’s vaccine portal, more community health partners are joining the race to help get everyone vaccinated.

It’s a part of the Oklahoma State Department of Health's latest push to increase points of access to the public.

Kathy Stamps, a Tahlala resident, is among the thousands of people searching for an open appointment to get vaccinated. Stamps became eligible last week, but she’s spent more than a month looking for availability for her mother.

“I think the odds of winning the powerball is higher than getting a slot right now," Stamps said.

Stamps said she’s frustrated but the news of a third vaccine is giving her hope more slots will become available. Meanwhile, some community health partners are now helping the vaccination effort as well.

Among them is T. Roy Barnes, an independent pharmacy in Tulsa. They are among dozens of partners helping to vaccinate the public. The pharmacy received 100 doses in their first shipment and administered them in the first week. Last week’s storm put a halt on their operation but it's back to normal now with plans to likely expand once a third vaccine is available.

“It’s just limited to 100 per week," Barnes said. "I’m not really sure what the timeline is in terms of expanding that, but it’s very possible with Johnson & Johnson just around the corner.”

Although doses are limited, health leaders are also asking residents to check with their primary care physician to get a vaccine.
