'Essential' to hear from Green Country healthcare workers fighting COVID-19

Healthcare workers are speaking out about their experience working on the front lines of the pandemic.

Many of them are posting on social media to share their concerns about staffing, workload, and hospital administration.

This week an ICU nurse called out Governor Stitt for refusing to acknowledge healthcare workers during a visit to a Tulsa hospital. She also questioned his refusal to issue a statewide mask mandate.

“Do the right things and wear a mask and follow CDC guidelines because honestly we’re strained to the point where this is not sustainable.”

Her post is no longer up.

It is this frustration many are seeing across Green Country. The frustration over people not taking COVID-19 safety protocols seriously is felt by nurses statewide.

Many of them see patients die every day.

“To have someone read their last, to tell their family their last words are going to be and to be the last person to speak to that person before they subsequently die is not something I think you ever bounce back from,” said Pattie Davis, president of the Oklahoma Hospital Association.

That’s the message nurses want to convey to the public, but many of them are not able to speak out about their experience.

The Oklahoma State Medical Association said, “we think it is essential that the public continues to hear from these frontline workers and hopefully understand the impact their individual behaviors can have on their community’s health care provider.”

Davis said people need to take this seriously.

“They are tired, they are weary, and they want to take this seriously and I think it’s important that we have to move ahead, and we have to move together through this,” said Davis.

2 Works for You reached out to the governor’s office about this but have not heard back.
