VERDIGRIS, Okla. — Euell Hanna is ending his teaching career on a high note at Verdigris High School.
In his 33 years as jazz band director, he has led the jazz band to 27 state championship titles.
“I wish I could say it's just magic, but there's a lot of hard work involved," said Mr. Hanna, "And they're willing to put up with it."
He said his students practice about eight hours a week in school, but many continue their long hours at home.
"He's influenced me a lot on the way I play especially jazz and honestly, it's probably because of him that I play the way I do," said Kyle Broadbrooks, a senior and drummer in the band.
Students, like Broadbrooks, said Mr. Hanna has pushed them to be the best musicians. Many will come back next school year to a new band director.
"Now that he's leaving it's kind of hitting you oh I don't get to have him here anymore," said Olivia Sadler, a saxophonist in the jazz band.
Mr. Hanna said he always wanted to be a teacher ever since the fifth grade. Although he retires in May after a long and successful teaching career, he isn't quitting music altogether.
He has a part-time job set up at a music store in Tulsa, where he'll get to travel to different schools and help young band directors.
His jazz band's last performance will be on Friday, May 17 at the high school graduation.
