TULSA -- Anger and frustration were the reactions to the closure of one of north Tulsa’s most frequented gas stations near Pine and Peoria.
But as rumor would have it, the closure may not be a bad thing. Word on the street is a QuikTrip could soon occupy the location, but those reports are unconfirmed.
For residents in north Tulsa, food insecurity has been an issue for years.
“Primarily District 1 is a food desert,” Vanessa Hall-Harper, District 1 City Councilor said. “We have a lack of healthy food options as well as fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as fresh meats.”
Hall-Harper said north Tulsans without transportation have no means to get proper groceries.
“There are so many in district 1 that cannot do that,” Hall-Harper said. “I see people everyday walking back and forth.”
Many rely on the Fiesta Mart for food and gas, and when residents learned of its closing, frustration grew. However, rumors circulating suggest this may be a good thing.
“We are excited about opportunities that we are hearing,” Hall-Harper said.
A QuikTrip is rumored to be taking the place of Fiesta Mart, which Hall Harper said would benefit the community greatly.
“I would love to see that happen... and so we’ll see,” Hall-Harper said.
Meanwhile, the District 1 City Councilor will focus on bringing a true grocery store to the area, while fighting off the saturation of “dollar” type stores popping up in the area.
“Just by the fact they have had to purchase groceries in a discount dollar store, I automatically know there are no fruits and vegetables and nothing healthy.”
Plans to reduce food insecurity are in the works and talk of a QuikTrip could mean the area is headed in the right direction.
2 Works for You did reach out to QuikTrip representatives who said the area near Pine and Peoria has been an area of interest for awhile.
They said there is a possibility a store could take over this location, but did not confirm the purchase of the lot.
