TULSA, Okla. — Unemployment is at an all time high due to the coronavirus.

While many have filed to receive benefits, others have found creative ways to keep the bills paid.

A Tulsa mother tells her story of what she had to go through to provide for her three children during this pandemic.

Sylvia Treat never thought she would be starting her own lawn service.

In fact, she tells 2 Works for you, clients are surprised a woman comes to the door when she shows up to complete the jobs.

Sylvia Treat originally began a career in the medical field, but left to help with a campaign.

That campaign, for criminal justice reform came to an immediate halt because of COVID-19, and she was laid off.

Treat tells me after being left jobless, she drained her savings account to keep her bills paid, and food on the table for her family.

That's when she started 'Local Family Lawn Care', and it's more successful than she ever thought it would be.

“It was horrible, I just sat for like three weeks and was like, what am I going to do?" Treat said. "So I decided that I was going to do something I guess I have never done before, it worked out really well.”

Treat tells me it all started out with a friend asking to have their lawn mowed as they were moving.

One thing led to another, she had so many people calling for service, she hired three people to help.

Turning her panic into calm, she says the best part if being her own boss.

Treat also says the women in her community have become extremely supportive.

Reaching out to encourage her and checking on her throughout the journey.

She has a message for other unemployed families, and women looking for a way out.

“Just find a resource you can use, their are ways to make money that you don’t need to have a 9 to 5 job for," Treat said. "You can be your own boss.”
