Firefighters train to help during mental illness

TULSA — Tulsa firefighters are usually the first to arrive on scene every time a call for help is made.

Which is why they are getting special training to help those with mental illness.

The group Nami Tulsa is giving crews the tools they need to better understand what's happening during an interaction with someone with mental health issues.

These exercises also teach them to have an open mind when heading to a scene.

Tulsa Fire Department spokesperson Andy Little says, "There were some phrases that were said maybe it's not a drug related incident which sometimes those calls can be confused for."

The group Nami Tulsa advocates for those with mental illness and helps their families.
