Christian Fencer and his niece, 25-year-old Cherokee tribal member Aubrey Dameron, were extremely close. Both struggled with their identity growing up, being only six months apart.
“We started figuring out who we were as adults, human beings in general,” Christian said.
But the question of fitting in seemed always to follow Aubrey.
“Whenever she would go into public places, she knew that people were going to be looking at her like she was an exhibit,” Christian said.
Aubrey is transgender, which is frowned upon in small town Oklahoma, according to Christian.
Despite being misunderstood, Christian says he told Aubrey he would always be there for her.
But now she’s gone, and he’s desperately looking for her.
Aubrey Dameron has been missing since last spring.
According to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, she was last seen at 3 a.m. on March 9, 2019.
Aubrey messaged several people on Facebook asking for a ride, according to a missing person’s report.
She has not been seen since, and no one has been identified as the person who picked Aubrey up.
Records show Aubrey left without her cell phone and purse. There have been several unconfirmed sightings in Oklahoma as well as Missouri, but none panned out.
Captain Gayle Wells says all investigative leads are being followed.
“Everyone is a suspect in this case until we are able to verify that nothing happened to Aubrey or that something tragic happened,” Captain Wells with the Delaware County Sheriff's Office said.
It’s been almost a year, and Christian says he lives in constant pain.
He wants to know what happened to Aubrey, even if it means Aubrey is no longer alive.
“This has gone on too long. Our family deserves answers. Aubrey deserves to be laid to rest, if that’s the case,” Christian said.
Aubrey’s family will be holding a candlelight vigil to mark the one year anniversary of her disappearance on March 9, 2020.
