FORT GIBSON, Okla. — The Memorial Day program brought a crowd to Ft. Gibson National Cemetery on Memorial Day despite the nearby flooding.
Those in attendance say they were proud to take time away from disaster mode to honor America’s heroes.
“We had a few hundred visit Fort Gibson National Cemetery today and around 100 people attend the ceremony,” said Sara Elton, assistant director, VA’s National Cemetery Administration Continental District. “Everyone was in good spirits and really needed to be together and not think about floods for awhile. We felt privileged that the community turned out this Memorial Day to pay respects to the fallen at Fort Gibson National Cemetery. VA promised a ceremony and wanted to deliver on that promise for veterans, families and the community.”
