ADAIR COUNTY, Okla. — The Grand River Dam Authority has announced plans to build a whitewater park on the Illinois River in Adair County.

According to a news release, Lake Frances Whitewater Park, will be built near Watts if a permit is approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The purpose of the park would be to mitigate the known hazard surrounding the Lake Frances Dam, while also providing a recreational opportunity and promote economic development in northeastern Oklahoma.

Boating activities at the park will be focused on kayaking, surfing, stand-up paddle boarding and rafting.

The project is proposed at this time, and the GRDA is still awaiting permit approval before construction begins.
