MCALESTER — McAlester Public Schools is delaying the start of school for the 2020-21 academic year.

Officials announced they are delaying the start of the school year due to the continued rise of coronavirus cases in the community.

The new start date is Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2020.

The board approved the below recommendations during a meeting on Monday, Aug. 10:

  • Tues. Aug. 25, 2020 - Open House for Pre-K through 8th grade from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Wed. Aug. 26, 2020 - First day of school for students (both traditional in-person and virtual)

Parents who are interested in having their student learn virtually can email their principal to sign up. Otherwise, students will be in on-campus learning.

I know delaying the start of school will be disappointing for students and an inconvenience for families. I want to begin school on time, but – even more importantly – I want, and must, protect the safety and health of our students and staff. By pressing “pause” for two weeks, it will allow our team and local health officials to better assess the COVID risk in our area.
