MCALESTER, Okla.- A man is dead and another was fighting for his life in McAlester Sunday.

Police say the two men were in their neighborhood, located on Third Street, when an argument escalated and resulted in them being shot in the back. Neighbor Amanda Tinker said Sunday morning started with lots of yelling outside.

“About 15-20 minutes later, I see cops cars pulling up, crime scene tape going up and I knew something tragic had just happened,” she said.

Just across the street, police found 32-year-old Michael Meneley on the porch, shot in the back. He later died while 32-year-old Damon Williams was rushed to the hospital. Police say a third man was involved but was uninjured.

“It's kind of weird to be in the town you live in and there's shootings,” said Michelle Gomez, a family friend of Meneley's.

Police say 41-year-old Sam Nava soon turned himself in. He lived two doors down and told police the group got into an argument Saturday night. But it's what Nava did in his driveway Sunday that got out of control.

“The three victims come up there and approached him and he says two attempted to assault him through a window of the vehicle and that's when he pulled out a gun and shot them as they were running away,” said McAlester Police Detective Chris Morris.

Nava was booked into the Pittsburg County jail. Nava is a convicted felon and had just been released from prison. He now faces charges of gun possession after his conviction and first degree murder, among others.

Meneley's wife and three children spoke to 2 Works for You about the loss of the man they called father and husband.

“He was funny, he made everyone laugh,” said Gomez.

Williams underwent surgery Sunday.
