TULSA — How are you spending your time at home these days? You're probably busy with the kids and the job.
But 2 Works for You's Mike Brooks found out there's a way to carve some time to get your home organized.
You've probably heard about Marie Kondo, or Konmarie, she's a Japanese organizing consultant.
And her goal is to help more people live a life that "Sparks Joy."
Well I found a certified master "Konmari" home organizer to get some tips on what we can do at home right now to get organized.
Erin Mursch says the idea isn't about minimalism, it's about intentional ownership and surrounding ourselves only with things that make our lives better.
"We have a tendency to hold on to stuff not because we love it, but either it has always just been there, or we're not sure what to do with it. It's kind of a default mode...and we accumulate things over time. These things don't necessarily improve our quality of life at all, so by just taking a moment to ask ourselves "What is this doing for me?" it's allowing you to make a choice, and make a change," says Erin, a Certified Master Konmari Organizing Consultant. "So, a way you can do this to apply this method in a small way, is to start with something like your junk drawer. That is a good example, it's a small place to start, doesn't take much time, but it will give you the skills you can apply in other areas of your home as well. So, you'll want to start by removing everything and change your mindset around what it is. It's not a junk drawer, it's a utility drawer.
Erin continues, "So, everything that goes into this drawer serves some function, some utility in your life. I see things like rubber bands and twist ties, and tape and scissors, and batteries and maybe a flashlight. What you don't want to put in there is like left over ketchup packets, and mints and loose toothpicks, and just junk that will junk it up. In order to prevent it from getting junky later on, assign each of those items that do have a useful purpose, you're going to assign each of those it's own home within the drawer."
Erin says she likes to use iPhone boxes to give things "Homes" within that utility drawer.
Now stay tuned, because Erin and I talked about ways to get organized, and I'll share them with you soon.
