TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa police say two officers pulled over a BMW for simply driving without tags near the corner of East 66th Place and South Victor Avenue Sunday morning — when things took a violent turn.

According to TPD, pulling into a house driveway, the suspect pulled out a pistol that then fired and hit a rookie officer in the foot.

The other officer on scene reportedly fired back, hitting the suspect "multiple times in the midsection."

“They were able to get the suspect in custody, and start doing first aid for both the officer and the suspect. And then both were transported to local hospitals," TPD Captain Richard Meulenberg said.

"The officer has non-life-threatening injuries.”

Investigators described the scene as a "mess," with multiple guns found on the suspect and in the car.

“What we’re doing is we’re waiting for a search warrant at this time since the car is up on the (driveway) of someone’s property," Capt. Meulenberg said. "So as soon as that warrant gets in we’ll process the scene.”

It is the first confirmed Tulsa Police Department officer-involved shooting since March.

TPD said two things have to be decided from Sunday's investigation with the district attorney's office: One is to confirm whether the shooting was justified, and the second is to decide possible charges for the suspect.

Neighbors later in the day told 2 News off-camera they see police activity in the neighborhood frequently.

Marla Royal said she witnessed the aftermath of the shooting and worries for her clients who live several doors down.

“Because you never know," Royal said. "I mean, what if I’d have been here earlier? I don’t know. I thank God I wasn’t caught in the crossfire of it.”

Tulsa police said it expects updates to be released Monday.
