PAWNEE COUNTY, Okla. -- The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is investigating after a woman shot and killed herself at the Pawnee County Jail.
The woman, identified as Brittany DeVerges, 26, was arrested early Tuesday morning for public intoxication and possession of paraphernalia. She was booked into the jail in a detox cell.
Officials said DeVerges was observed at 10:30 a. m. Tuesday, and it was determined she should remain in the detox cell.
At noon, the woman was found unresponsive in the cell. Officials said she had a handgun and a gunshot wound to the chest.
All evidence suggests DeVerges snuck the weapon into the jail. OSBI said they cannot definitively say it was a suicide without the opinion of a medical examiner.
Because the investigation is ongoing, neither the Pawnee Police nor the Pawnee County Sheriff's Office were able to comment.
