OWASSO, Okla. — An officer-involved shooting that left one dead has Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation officials camped at the end of a small road in east Owasso as of Monday evening.
The suspect has been identified as Lance Daniel Paxton, according to OSBI.
Owasso police said the cross-town chase ended Monday afternoon with law enforcement shooting a male suspect who reportedly pointed a shotgun at those responding.
It's not yet confirmed whether an OPD officer or an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper shot the suspect.
Owasso Deputy Chief of Police Jason Woodruff told 2 News just after 3 p.m., Owasso police received a tip that an armed suicidal person was driving through the city in a dark SUV.
He said when an officer was at a traffic light behind a similar-looking SUV, they noticed a plate that didn't match the car it was on.
Woodruff added when the officer tried to pull the SUV over, it sped away, beginning the chase that ended at a dead end on North 193rd East Avenue.
That's when police said the suspect pointed the shotgun, and the officers fired.
"It's definitely a concerning situation," Dep. Chief Woodruff said. "It's not the way any of us wanted this to turn out. But it'll be thoroughly investigated, and...OSBI will be the one conducting this (investigation), so we can stay out and be neutral since it does involve our officers."
"Our hearts go out to the family of this person," he added. "It's a tragic situation, and we will definitely be looking into it and figuring out exactly what happened."
This is a developing story.
