Tulsa Honor Academy expanding to high school

Posted

TULSA -- A charter school in Tulsa is growing after the Tulsa Public Schools Board of Directors approved to add high school ages to Tulsa Honor Academy.

They opened four years ago with just fifth graders, but now offer fifth through eighth grade at their school in East Tulsa.

They'll now add high school grades one grade at a time, starting next year with freshman.

THA isn't your typical school. The educators create the curriculum. They also encourage students to participate in lessons through the use of hand gestures.

One student who spoke on behalf of the school to the TPS board Monday night says she feels like THA creates an environment where students feel important.

"They always want to support the scholars, and they want us to succeed, there's never an unenthusiastic teacher like you may see at other schools, these teachers they care about us," said Nathalia Mireles, a student at THA.

They're looking to hire 15 new roles for their ninth grade students including teachers and counselors. You can head to their website to find out more information.
