TULSA --- A Tulsa woman claims a masked man appeared at her back door early Tuesday morning and taunted her with a knife.

It happened near the 3800 block of 21st Place around 4 a.m.

Misty Deffenbaugh said it felt like a nightmare.

“I was very terrified,” she said. “He is standing right here on my top step filling the whole door frame.”

As most neighborhoods prepare for All Hallows Eve, a night of spooky fun, one midtown neighborhood is making sure its doors are locked and lights turned on.

“My dog kind of woke me up whining and acting a little crazy,” Deffenbaugh said.

A bump in the night sent Deffenbaugh’s dog into a frenzy.

“I got up with her and she ran straight to my back door” she said. “And she went and ran straight to the neighbors side of the fence.”

Deffenbaugh said it was cold outside, so she shut the screen door and went to grab a jacket at the front of the house. She said when she returned to the back door, she was greeted with a horrifying sight.

“A man, he had a white mask. He has the little blood droplets going down the side of the mask, brown coveralls, a white scarf around the neck and a big old butcher knife in his left hand,” Deffenbaugh said.

She said she was frozen in fear.

“I screamed for my son and he jumps up and comes over here and grabs he door like this and slams it,” Deffenbaugh said.

After a quick call to 911, Tulsa police said they cased the area, but the masked perpetrator was gone. Police said perhaps this was a Halloween prank taken too far, one that could’ve ended differently.

“They said this guy could potentially be dead right now if you guys would have had the weapon to do that,” Deffenbaugh said.

On Tuesday night, as folks roam the streets on Halloween, the Duffenbaugh’s remain on alert.

“We want to get the word out because of all the children that’s going to be out tonight.”

They also said they’re increasing the security at their home, and they’ll be ready if the masked man makes another appearance.
