With the national debt continuing to grow, a group of citizens have created an online petition in hopes of selling Montana to Canada in hopes of reducing the United States' debt.

Nearly 10,000 people have signed a petition on Change.org in the last week that supports selling the Treasure State for $1 trillion to Canada. While $1 trillion is a hefty price tag, the overall United States deficit passed $22 trillion last week.

The US debt has grown on average by at least $ 1 trillion a year in recent years.

While Montana is the fourth-largest state in area, it is only 44th-most populated state in the United States with a total population of 1.06 million. Estimates of Montana's annual economic production are around $45 billion.

Canada's annual GDP is roughly $1.8 trillion per estimates.

Some of those who have signed the online petition claim to be Montana residents who would welcome the change in citizenship.

"I'm Montanan and hoping to join Canada without the moving costs," one signee wrote. "Let's do this. Please adopt us."

"Why not?" asked another signee.

Most of Montana has been part of the United States since the Louisiana Purchase. It was not until 1889 when Montana became the 41st state admitted into the union.
