Toddler sends couple's savings through the shredder

Posted

A Utah couple had saved more than $1,000 in cash to pay back the husband's parents for the purchase of University of Utah season tickets.

When the couple went to look for the envelope containing the money, it was missing.

According to a KSL-TV report, Ben and Jackee Belnap 2-year-old son Leo sent the envelope through the family's shredder.

Whoops!

“I’m digging through the trash, and she hollers and says, ‘I found it,’” Ben Belnap told KSL. “She’s holding the shredder, and she says, ‘I think the money is in here.'”

Jackee Belnap said that Leo knows how to use the shredder, and has helped the couple shred other documents in the past.

As the couple tries to figure out how to payback Ben Belnap's parents in the meantime, there is a possibility that some of the money could be recovered. According to KSL-TV, there is a government office that handles mutilated currency.

“I called the guy the next morning and he said, ‘Oh, we might be able to help you here,’ and I was shocked,” Ben Belnap told KSL. “He said, ‘Bag it up in little Ziploc bags, mail it to D.C., and in one to two years, you’ll get your money back.’”

It might take one to two years before the Belnaps trust Leo being around the shredder again.
