TULSA, Okla. — The Oklahoma Insurance Department is cracking down on a New Jersey home warranty company doing business right here in Oklahoma.
A 2 Works for You investigation revealed Choice Home Warranty is not licensed to sell in the state but doing it anyway, leaving customers with several complaints.
Since our investigation, at least 10 consumers have come forward wanting their money back.
"They are not allowed to offer any products or renewals in the state of Oklahoma," Mike Rhoads, deputy commissioner of consumer assistance at the Oklahoma Insurance Department, said.
The company has been in hot water with the OID for over a decade and has even paid $40,000 in fines. The company's practices apparently still continue after several consumers reached out to the 2 Works for You problem solvers to complain.
"A number of months ago, we had reached out to Choice Home Warranty to talk to them about discontinuing any new sales here in Oklahoma," Rhoads said.
He said Choice Home agreed to stop, yet the company is still in violation of operating in Oklahoma. To date, our investigative team was able to help one customer get thousands back on her policy and others have followed suit, with the OID sending demand letters on their behalf, giving Choice Home two weeks to refund policy premiums
"We have numerous, up to 10 of these letters that have been filed with the company that are going to be in the 14-day period," Rhoads said.
He said the company was sent cease and desist orders and he believes it is complying.
"They know that they are kind of caught in the act," Rhoads said.
Our team reached out to Choice Home to ask what they were doing to remedy the situation for Oklahoma consumers, but we're still waiting to hear back.
If you're looking to buy a home warranty, make sure you do your research. Check reviews online and talk to the Better Business Bureau. Then, check to see if they're licensed to do business in Oklahoma because some of the people who bought these policies said they just googled who sells home warranties, or they got an ad from them company.
If you do have a Choice Home Warranty policy, the Oklahoma Insurance Department wants to hear from you. You can reach a representative at 1-800-522-0071.
