If there’s anyone who needs to develop a calming meditation practice after dealing with my child more than I need to develop a calming meditation practice after dealing with my child, it’s my child’s teacher. Though the kid is only 5 years old, she’s already got that tween eye roll down cold, and the tone of voice she uses when saying “excuse me” or “actually” is chilling.

Though maybe all of the 5-year-olds out there would be less exhausting if only they had a meditation habit of their own.

If you agree, I have good news. Hip2Save reports that the people behind Calm, a subscription-based meditation app for your phone, are offering teachers free access to the app’s Premium-level meditations — access that carries with it a $59.99 value.

Calm

The Calm Schools Initiative is a new program that allows teachers to incorporate periods of quiet and intentionality into the school day. It’s available to any teacher with a K-12 classroom.

As a teacher, all you have to do is fill out a short form on the Calm website. After a few days, you’ll receive approval and unlimited access to numerous guided meditations and mindfulness exercises. Your confirmation email will also include tips and best practices for incorporating mindfulness into a classroom environment.

Access to Calm’s meditation library includes more than just your average mindfulness meditations and calming body scans. It also includes access to Calm Kids, which offers meditations tailored for various age groups from pre-K through high school.

Resources in the Calm Kids library run the gamut from sleep stories to soothing music and more:

So why should you consider using this in your classroom?

Research has shown that, as with adults, teaching mindfulness to children can reduce their levels of stress, depression and anxiety. It can also aid them in developing self-regulation skills. Imagine how different life could be if we’d all developed mental wellness habits at a young age, allowing us to manage our emotions and behaviors in a healthier way!

Maybe I’d be less road ragey?

And of course, after heading home for the day, teachers can also use the app to unwind on their own. After all, managing a full classroom of kids can really take it out of you.

If you’re interested in taking advantage of this program for use in your own classroom, you can find a link to the form here. And if you’re a parent who thinks this could be a great opportunity for your kid and all their friends, forward it along to their school!

Do you think your child could benefit from more mindfulness, both for themselves and from the adults in their lives?
