Police arrested a man they say made threatening messages about former President Donald Trump.
The Cochise County Sheriff's Office in southern Arizona, just outside of Tucson, says 66-year-old Ronald Lee Syrvud, was taken into custody Thursday afternoon after deputies conducted a felony traffic stop.
Earlier Thursday, police revealed they were searching for Syrvud as part of an investigation into "threats to kill a presidential candidate."
The threats, reportedly made on social media this week, took on increased significance as Trump was in the area for a visit to the border on Thursday.
The Cochise County Sheriff's Office said Syrvud had several warrants out for his arrest, including for failing to register as a sex offender. After his arrest, authorities said Syvrud was booked into the Cochise County Jail, where he remains in custody.
In addition to his visit to the border on Thursday, the former president is also scheduled to hold a rally in Glendale, Arizona on Friday according to his website's events page.
This week at an outdoor rally in Asheboro, North Carolina, Trump spoke to supporters from a stage as he was surrounded by bulletproof glass after new security measures were approved by the Secret Service.
In July, Trump was the victim of an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania. Trump was shot in the ear, while a person in the crowd was killed and two others were injured.
